What surfaces will BEYOND PAINT™ adhere to?

BEYOND PAINT™ will bond to almost any clean, dry, grease, oil, and wax free household surface without sanding stripping or priming! These surfaces include raw wood, or wood painted with oil, latex, polyurethane, varnish, epoxy, etc. Other surfaces including metal, Formica, laminate, plastic, linoleum, masonry, tile, and even glass! We’ve even had customers BEYOND PAINT™ their refrigerators!!

If I don’t have to sand, strip, or prime, how do I prep the surface?

Be sure your surface is clean, dry, grease, oil, and wax free.

Can BEYOND PAINT™ be used on concrete? Will it hold up well on outdoor uncovered concrete and the methods/steps I need to do to achieve this?

BEYOND PAINT™ can be used on concrete. We recommend cleaning the surface with a power washer and allowing the patio to thoroughly dry. BEYOND PAINT™ on as directed, avoid working in extreme temperatures, as the extreme heat could cause an adverse effect on BEYOND PAINT™. After 2-3 days roll on two thin coats of BEYOND PAINT™ Multi-purpose Sealer.

Is your paint durable enough to paint a tile floor?

Yes! You can paint BEYOND PAINT™ on your tile floor! Scrub well with Simple Green, rinse and allow drying overnight. Apply 2 coats of BEYOND PAINT™. Allow the last coat to dry for 2-3 days. Apply 2-3 coats of BEYOND PAINT™ Multi-Purpose Sealer. A painted floor can be a challenging surface. Allowing each layer to dry for prolonged periods and staying off the floor for a few days after the sealer is applied would be ideal!

What are the best tools to use with BEYOND PAINT™?

BEYOND PAINT™ works best with a high quality all-purpose fabric or woven (3/4” nap) roller. Choose a roller that does not have a “button “on the end, allowing you to use the roller end in crevices and around raised panels etc. Use haphazard short rolling strokes in every direction with a light touch. Use a natural bristle or high-quality “chip” brush and “mush” or stipple into hard to reach crevices or areas that cannot be rolled. Use the roller over these stippled or “mushed” areas to even out the texture. Avoid traditional brush strokes with BEYOND PAINT™.
* All of the tools are included in the BEYOND PAINT™ Cabinets, Furniture and More or Countertop Makeover Kits! A BEYOND PAINT™ Tool Kit can be ordered separately for your convenience.

If I don’t have to sand, strip, or prime, how do I prep the surface?

Be sure your surface is clean, dry, and grease free. Products like Liquid Gold, Pledge and Murphy’s Oil Soap leave a greasy residue that should be removed for the best bonding on surfaces.

What should I clean the surface with?

One of our favorite cleaners is Simple Green. We use it at full strength. Other household cleaners like Spic and Span, Fantastic, or Mr. Clean that remove grease are also acceptable. Use the rough surface side of a scrubbing sponge for best results. Rinse the surface and allow it to dry thoroughly.

*Some common cleaning products leave a greasy/waxy residue that needs to be removed. ie: Liquid Gold, Pledge, Endust, Lemon Oil and Murphy’s Oil Soap are examples of these. Ordinary household undiluted white vinegar (very eco-friendly) or mineral spirits are terrific for removing wax from a surface. Wipe the surface several times with the vinegar or mineral spirits until you no longer feel a waxy residue.

Is TSP (Trisodium Phosphate) a good cleaner to use?

Using TSP will leave an undesirable Phosphate residue on your surface unless it is rinsed very well. We prefer to use Simple Green or something similar unless your project is really greasy and needs the big guns!

What if my project has existing chipping paint, holes, a bumpy surface or deep gouges?

BEYOND PAINT™ is a thick and very slightly textured product. While it is great at helping to conceal a slightly imperfect surface, existing chipping paint, holes; excessive bumpiness or deep gouges must first be addressed, sanded and/or repaired prior to using BEYOND PAINT™

How can I be sure my project is going to turn out the way I want it to?

This is by far one of the best and most frequently asked questions!
Always do a sample before beginning your project!
If you do one kitchen cabinet door or drawer, one leg of your table or even a spare piece of wood FROM START TO FINISH prior to starting your project…you will have confidence and assurance that your project will turn out just as you hoped.

How long does it take to dry?

Dry time for each coat is 2-4 hours on average but allow for increased drying time in humid conditions.

Is BEYOND PAINT™ safe to use while I’m pregnant, on a child’s crib or around my children and pets?

Yes, BEYOND PAINT™ is low VOC, non-toxic, water-based and has no noticeable odor. Therefore, it is safe in these circumstances. We do recommend that you keep these products out of reach of children, and that you practice safe work habits like ample ventilation and good caution.

Why is BEYOND PAINT™ slightly textured?

BEYOND PAINT™ is slightly textured for several reasons. This slight texture is part of the reason you will not get roller or brush marks no matter how much of a beginner you are. The texture also allows for versatility, meaning if you use it slightly thicker you will get a more dramatic effect. The slight texture in BEYOND PAINT™ also helps hide surface imperfections. Finally, when dry, the slight texture in BEYOND PAINT™ helps conceal fingerprints from everyday use.

What is the sheen of BEYOND PAINT™?

BEYOND PAINT™ has a beautiful Matte sheen.

Can BEYOND PAINT™ be diluted?

Diluting BEYOND PAINT™ is NOT recommended for a less textured finish. Adding water would compromise the integrity of the product's bonding properties. Using less paint and doing an extra coat or two is the best way to achieve a "smoother" finish.

Can I tint BEYOND PAINT™?

Yes! Each quart of BEYOND PAINT™, can be tinted with up to 4oz of universal water based tints.
*BEYOND PAINT™ will not accept returns of product that has been tinted.

How can I achieve other colors of BEYOND PAINT™?

The best and easiest way to achieve other colors of BEYOND PAINT™ is to intermix our existing colors. This maintains the integrity and properties of BEYOND PAINT™. It’s simple, get a small disposable cup and try it with small amounts of BEYOND PAINT™ in approximate proportions. For example in a paper cup with a plastic spoon, mix approximately 1 part (or one spoonful) of Off White with 1 part (Or another spoonful) of Buttercream to make an even softer yellow color.

Can I paint over BEYOND PAINT™?

Yes! You can paint over your BEYOND PAINT™ project with another color of BEYOND PAINT™. If you choose to paint over a BEYOND PAINT™ surface with an ordinary household paint, follow that manufacturers directions before beginning.

Can you wax over BEYOND PAINT™?

Yes you can!
We suggest using Liberon wax, which is a once and done and the only wax on the market that is designed to be a hard protective furniture finish. Liberon comes from England and has been around for over 100 years. Liberon dries to a hard furniture finish that does not feel waxy or sticky. It doesn't have to be periodically reapplied…something that no one wants to do! We have less confidence in some of the synthetic waxes that have newly emerged on the market. We always suggest you try a small area first before doing your entire project to insure success. Thank you for your support and interest in BEYOND PAINT™!

Should I use a topcoat over my BEYOND PAINT™ surfaces?

BEYOND PAINT™ provides a protective coat within its formula. If you’re worried about wear and tear or protecting a heavily used surface, like a floor or a daily used table, wait 3-5 days and apply 1-2 coats of our BEYOND PAINT™ Multi-Purpose Sealer. This will give added durability and weather resistance to any indoor/outdoor project. *If you are using our BEYOND PAINT™ Countertop product, our BEYOND PAINT™ Multi-purpose Sealer must be used in conjunction with it.

What if I’m using BEYOND PAINT™ on a heavily used surface?

If you are using BEYOND PAINT™ on a heavily used surface like a floor or your kitchen table, then use our BEYOND PAINT™ Mulit-Purpose Sealer as an extra protective topcoat. After your project is dry for 3-5 days, apply 1-2 thin coats of BEYOND PAINT™ Multi-Purpose Sealer. This will give added durability and weather resistance to any project.

Can a piece of furniture finished with BEYOND PAINT™ be used outdoors?

Although BEYOND PAINT™ has a sealer within it, if you are not going to have your BEYOND PAINT™ pieces under a covered outdoor area and your piece has to hold up under the elements, then apply a coat of BEYOND PAINT™ Multi Purpose Sealer which is designed to make any piece of furniture suitable for Outdoor use.

How long do I have to let it cure?

BEYOND PAINT™ will be dry to the touch in 2-4 hours. It is sometimes still sensitive to chipping until it has undergone an initial cure period of 2-3 days. Allow to fully cure for 30 days before routinely washing with soap.

Why is my BEYOND PAINT™ surface getting little chips or peeling?

On the rare occasion that chipping or peeling may occur, the cause is usually from one of two reasons.
The number one cause of this occurrence is simply that BEYOND PAINT™ is not yet dry. People are often anxious to put their project immediately to use when BEYOND PAINT™ is dry to the touch…but that doesn’t mean it is really dry. Chipping and or peeling are rarely an issue when you follow recommended drying and curing times. Be careful using tools around a freshly BEYOND PAINT™ surface as they will chip a wet surface as well.

The second cause of rare chipping or peeling is that the surface was not cleaned properly before BEYOND PAINT™. Be sure to follow the recommendations for Cleaning and drying prior to beginning your project.

What do I do if I didn’t prep well and my finish is chipping?

Lightly sand the chipped area with 220 to 400 grit sandpaper and touch it up with more BEYONDPAINT®. Allow this to dry for at least 24 hours. We then recommend applying a coat of BEYONDPAINT® Multi Purpose Sealer. The bonding power of BEYONDPAINT® occurs as all the moisture evaporates. A newly BEYONDPAINT® project may be lightly used within hours of receiving its last coat, but RECLAIM® will reach its full bonding strength, durability, and hardness after approximately 30 days.

I am doing kitchen cabinets that were painted with oil paint then latex over the oil. Can BEYOND PAINT™ go right over that or should I get the latex that is peeling off first.

Unfortunately latex paint should never be applied over oil-based paint. To correct this severely unstable surface, this is one of the rare occasions that we recommend sanding the surface to remove all the latex paint. Once the latex is removed and the surface is clean and dry, you can proceed with applying BEYOND PAINT™.

What if I want an Antique or Distressed look?

There are several ways to achieve an antique or distressed look with BEYOND PAINT™®.

Sanding is the first option you have. Use a small hand sander with 150-220 grit sandpaper to wear through edges and corners, as much or as little as desired. Remember when you do this, you will see the color you are covering up, so be sure this is agreeable with your design.

BEYOND PAINT™ Antiquing Glaze is another option. Simply roll on the Glaze and wipe it back with either a wet or damp cloth to achieve the color you desire.

Combining both sanding and BEYOND PAINT™ Antiquing Glaze makes the possibilities endless. Always make a sample of your work before forging ahead on your whole project.

How can I make BEYONDPAINT® Antiquing Glaze as dark as possible?

When you roll on BEYONDPAINT® Antiquing Glaze be careful not to wipe it back too hard. Just use a soft cloth to barely "blot" the glaze very gently. This will keep the glaze as dark as possible. You could also add a small amount (up to one ounce) of a translucent furniture stain to 16 oz. of the glaze to darken. Test a small amount of the glaze with a very small amount of stain to be sure you like this addition of color prior to starting your project.

What topcoat do you recommend?

We recommend BEYOND PAINT™ Multi-Purpose Sealer over BEYOND PAINT™.

How many coats of BEYOND PAINT™ Multi-purpose Sealer do I need?

We consider floors and countertops to be the most heavily used projects and would recommend 2-3 thin coats in these instances. If you require extra protection for a heavily used kitchen, dresser top, or coffee table 1 coat is sufficient.

Can I use your BEYOND PAINT™ Multi-purpose Sealer over any paint?

While we can't account for every paint on the market, BEYOND PAINT™ Multi-Purpose Sealer is beautiful over other paints as well. We always suggest trying a small area first before doing your entire project to insure success.

What if I want a glossy finish?

No problem! Just wait 3-5 days after BEYOND PAINT™ has dried and apply * your favorite high quality topcoat in the sheen of your choice. We also recommend our BEYOND PAINT™Multi-purpose Sealer which will slightly increase the sheen of RECLAIM® to a low level Satin.

*Test any topcoat that is not BEYOND PAINT™ Multi-Purpose Sealer on a small area for sheen and possible yellowing/clouding before doing your entire project.

What is the proper technique for applying the Sealer?

Shake or stir the Sealer thoroughly. The key to applying the Sealer is THIN coats. Our jar of BEYOND PAINT™ Multi-purpose Sealer really does cover 100 sq. ft. because it is to be applied in thin coats. It provides extreme durability and is engineered so that a little bit goes a long way. If the Sealer is applied too heavily it could result in a cloudy finish especially over dark colors.

Using only a small amount of Sealer, brush into crevices and roll everything else using a 1/4" nap all-purpose fabric roller.

Allow 2-4 hours drying time before applying your second coat. If a 3rd coat is desired, wait one week after applying your 2nd coat.

HINT: After dipping your roller into BEYOND PAINT™ Multipurpose Sealer wring the roller out on the roller tray to remove as much Sealer as possible.

Then, apply small amounts of what is left on the roller to a few areas of your project before filling in the complete area. This will help avoid putting too much sealer in one place.

ie...I'm painting cabinet doors. I dip the roller into the Sealer and download as much as possible on the tray. Then i roll my roller onto the center of three doors and go back and fill in all three doors with the one dip of Sealer…you don't need a lot!

I just applied BEYOND PAINT™ Multi-purpose Sealer and now my surface is cloudy. What can I do?

Allow the surface to completely dry (this may take up to one week) and the moisture to completely evaporate from the surface.

If the surface is still cloudy, you can apply another coat of BEYOND PAINT™ and repeat the Sealer using a very thin coat.

Can BEYOND PAINT™ be applied with a sprayer?

YES! BEYOND PAINT™ works with both HVLP (High volume, low pressure) and airless systems. If using an HVLP sprayer system use a 2.0 or 2.4 nozzle.

How do I prep my countertop?

Can BEYOND PAINT™ Countertop paint be used on Corian countertops?

Yes. It can be used on Corian.

How do I achieve a 2-color “granite” finish on my countertop?

Roll on two coats of your first color of BEYOND PAINT™ COUNTERTOP. Allow this to dry. Sponge on your second color of BEYOND PAINT™ COUNTERTOP, working in small (1 foot x 1 foot) sections. Sprinkle Countertop Flecks immediately onto these wet sponged areas. Allow this to dry. Sand the BEYOND PAINT™ COUNTERTOP FLECKS and apply BEYOND PAINT™ Multipurpose Sealer as directed.

I want a 2-color granite finish for my counter surface, but I’ve never sponged anything before? Is there a special technique to it?

No special techniques are required, but we do have a couple tips. Be sure to use a Sea Sponge, not a household sponge for this effect. Wet your Sea Sponge with water and wring it out well before beginning. Dip the damp Sea Sponge into the paint covering a lot of its surface. Dab the Sea Sponge on a clean paper towel, piece of newsprint or paper plate to remove excess paint before sponging. Use various parts of the sponge to avoid repetitive marks on your surface when sponging.

If you plan on using the Countertop Flecks as part of your finish, then work in small areas with your sponging. Sponge a 1’ x 1’ or 1’ x 2’ area of countertop and immediately sprinkle Countertop Flecks onto wet sponged paint to ensure that the flecks adhere.

How much drying time should I allow between my last coat of BEYOND PAINT™ Countertop and my first coat of BEYONDPAINT® Multipurpose Sealer?

Allow a minimum of 24 hours for a BEYOND PAINT™ surface to dry before applying the sealer. If you are working in humid conditions, 36-48 hours of drying time is preferred. Remember, the bonding power of BEYOND PAINT™ occurs as all the moisture evaporates. So, if you have the luxury of allowing more drying time between coats, you will achieve a harder surface in a shorter amount of time for your counter top!

How long until I can use my new BEYOND PAINT™ Countertop?

After applying your last coat of BEYOND PAINT™ Multi-purpose Sealer, wait at least 8 hours or overnight before lightly using your new counter surface.

What is a sharp object (like a knife) scratches or nicks my countertop?

As with any counter surface, avoid direct cutting on your BEYOND PAINT™ Countertop. If a scratch occurs have no fear. BEYOND PAINT™ Multi-purpose Sealer makes repair work a snap! Our Multi-purpose Sealer was engineered with “easy touch-up technology.” This means you can take a small artist paint brush and brush a small amount of Sealer over the scratch and watch the offending mark disappear!

If your surface suffered a scratch that went deeper than the Sealer, use a small artist brush to apply BEYOND PAINT™ Countertop Paint and allow it to dry. When this repair is dry, reapply the Multi-purpose Sealer.

How do I clean my new BEYOND PAINT™ surface?

After waiting 30 days for your BEYOND PAINT™ surface to fully cure it can be washed with mild soap and water if needed.
